Weavers remain economically weak: Survey
But, here the question is the economic vulnerability of weavers, who have been facing hardship for years due to one reason or the other. The economic survey (2009-10) claimed that human development index (HDI) of India was improving gradually but weavers and their children in Varanasi continued to die either by committing suicide or succumbing to malnutrition. A report on suicide and malnutrition among weavers in Varanasi was prepared by the Peoples Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR) in collaboration with ActionAid, an international anti-poverty agency. It claimed about 175 weavers have fallen prey to financial hardships since 2002. "After the slump in saree industry, the weavers have been facing acute hardships," said Lenin Raghuvanshi of PVCHR.Read more...

Public Hearing on the realization of rule of law for scheduled caste
Anti Torture Initiative, Anti Violence Initiative
Caritas India and People Vigilance Community for Human Rights (PVCHR) successfully organized a state-level Public Hearing on the realization of rule of law for scheduled caste in Patna on 17 May 2013. Its principal objective is to provide a platform to the Schedule Caste especially Mahadalits for sharing their atrocities against them and to come out with recommendation for the state government for improving the human rights situation of Schedule Caste especially mahadalits.
